themselves, with therir organization. Lapham thought he was absolutely Wrong and said so. Finally Lapham said, “Now, see here, Bridges, I don't think that you make this clear to your men. I don't think the longshoremen understand this. This we can't do and we won't do for clear reasons. I've told them through you and you understand them. I'd like to meet you in an open meeting where all the longshoremen are. I'd like to explain to them in your presence just why we can't do this, just what the real issues are, just what the real problem is. How about that, Bridges?”

Bridges said, “Pine, that's all right, Mr. Lapham. I agree.”

Well, Lapham was astonished because he thought that Bridges wouldn't agree to it. Bridges was astonished that Lapham wanted to do it. Bridges want ahead and announced it and hired a hall, or took the hall that the longshoremen always used for their meetings, and had them all there. Lapham went down and made a speech. Mrs. Lapham said to me afterwards, “I wont with Rogsr. I never thought he'd come back and I made up my mind I was going to be right with him. If they started going after Roger to kill him, I was going to be there too.” She went down really believing that something awful was going to happen to Roger Lapham.
