this matter, since he had persuaded them to hear me, when they wouldn't do that at first. So I acceeded to that. Of course, I felt that the presence of the public would have been a great protection to me. I know it would have. To this day I can't remember what I said. I've got the prepared statement but they questioned me for well over an hour and there's no record at all of that. It was good stuff that I said, and if the public had been there, I would have had the benefit of the reaction to the intelligent statements that I made. As Gerry said to me afterwards, “I never saw you handle yourself better than you did on this occasion. It was a very fine performance.”
Hatton Sumners said the same thing to me. “You handled yourself perfectly. I wouldn't have believed anybody could do it. Didn't you ever get mad at them, Miss Frances?”
I said, “I thought it wasn't a good idea to show it on the surface, Mr. Sumners.”
He said, “Absolutely right, my deah girl. Absolutely right. You took the starch out of them by looking at them so politely and saying, ‘I didn't quite hear you sir.’”
