episode, turned sour. Madden never did, Madden was a good fellow. He was just as good as he could be, but he was not shrewd enough, we'll say, to see where he was being led - not by the two Smiths, but by the people who were in the National Labor Relations Board down the line. At any rate, that was the way those appointments were made on the way to the Harvard tricentennial.

By the way, that was the day of the great rain, one of the greatest rains in New England, There were all the dignitaries of all of the universities of the world sitting on this open platform under the beautiful trees in the Harvard yard. They had on beautiful, magnificent academic costumes. The academic costumes of the Europeans are magnificent. They're quite different from ours. The rector of the University of Paris has a great high cap which is almost like the Pope's tiara only it's made of silk - of cerise, white and black silk trimmed with ermine. Magnificent! There they all were getting completely soaked by this heavy rain. There were also some of the most distinguished addresses I ever heard. I take off my hat to the academic set. Everyone of us sat there without turning a hair, The yard was full. The platform was full. Everybody was
