amiability, great friendship, great loyalty, but his engineering education, which I had assumed was good, had apparently not sunk in far enough so that it could really help us with what I had thought would be his chief duty - that is, the development of a series of industrial safety codes, selling them to either trade unions or industrialists throughout the country for accident prevention. He didn't like that kind of thing, anyway. He liked showy jobs.

However, he had only been with us a couple of weeks when this occasion occurred. I said, “Now Turner, you come with me and sit in as my assistant. If I'm called out, I'll leave you in charge. We're going to wash them out very soon and give them to Miss Abbott.”

So I went in and here was this horde of women - oh, an awful lot of them! It was just as obvious as the nose on your face what they were. They were lower East Side housewives, no more industrial than any woman out in the street. Some of them had babies with them. Some of them had children three and four years old being dragged about by the hand. I discovered that they had all been photographed on the sidewalk by some photographer they had alerted. As soon as I heard that they had all been photographed coming in, and that
