grievance, had the same kind of vanity that any elderly gentleman in New England or New York had. When bald they didn't like to admit it and allowed their hair to be parted just over one ear, allowing a few very long locks to grow and be draped over the top of the bald head, under the impression that that gave the appearance of hair on the top of the head, although it was really just a few long locks. I noticed that.

I also noticed that he had a kind of a tic, a little habit. About every ten minutes he would take out of his waistcoat pocket a very short comb and he would comb this lock - three times he would comb it and then would put the comb back. He kept doing this. At one time I became so suspicious of this man that I thought he was signalling to some other colleague in the group by that arrangement. I finally became convinced that it wasn't, that it was a purely automatic habit, one of those automatic habits that you call a tic.

His name was Wyndham Mortimer. It soon appeared, to me at least, that this man was an outside guider. I began to make some inquiries as to where he worked. Although he was then working at a bona fide automobile
