I began to think about this a good deal at that time, because that group was down in Washington two or three times. Over the period of a couple of years I saw enough of Wyndham Mortimer to be perfectly certain, as were other people, that he was a Communist. Collins finally looked him up and he was certain that he came out of that breed of cats, and not out of any plain working class group.

I remember that man and that group so clearly because they did successfully prevent any kind of sensible organization of the automobile workers, and any kind of a sensible settlement with the employers. After a while, of course, the union got formed. It grew enormously in a very short time. But always they were torn asunder in the top levels. Their officers were always fighting with each other. I'm sure that was because of the influence of this fellow, Wyndham Mortimer, and his running mate, both of whom got elected to, or appointed to, or into the upper councils of the union in one way or another. The automobile workers went through a terrific period of strife - not only intellectual strife in their own outfit, but actual physical fighting in which they fought each other.
