was the brightest, and quickest, the most intelligent, the best worker, and so she was doing the major part of the work.

I said, “All right, move her out of that immediately while we take a big think on this.”

“Oh,” he said, “I have. I moved her off today. Before I came up here I had her transferred to another job.”

“Have you told her?”

“No, I just sent out word that as of tonight she would be transferred to another division where there was need of help. Her boss came in protesting to me that he couldn't lose her because she was the best worker he had in that division.” However, he had done the right thing and had done it very quickly.

Then we sat down and thought of what we should do. I said, “I just think that's one of the things we can't have around.” I sent for my attorney and said, “What are my powers about firing anybody? I don't very often personally fire anybody from the Department of Labor. Usually they're fired at the bureau level. I don't understand the business of making charges.”

He said, “Hinrichs will have to be the one to fire her. She's his direct employee.”
