in the American courts, promote business in the settlement of various personal problems. As a matter of fact, I assisted him in getting out the required papers. After all, I was head of the Immigration Service. It was my duty to dig out these papers for anyone who wanted them and to present them to the Bar Association so that he might practice law. It was a very interesting little period.

Getting back to the luncheon, Tardieu was there. Tardieu was an extraordinarily intellectual man. He had a great force of intellect. He knew everything. He sat opposite me at the luncheon. I sat on General Petain's right. I was a minister so Anne was playing me up big. After all, the purpose of the organization was to promote French-American relations. Tardieu was across the board diagonally from me. It was a nice narrow French table so the distance wasn't too great. He speaks very good English, as well as French. General Petain never spoke any language except French - no German, no English, no nothing. Although I speak French Petain wasn't as conversational as he would be with a Frenchman. He had the fear that I wasn't understanding his nuances or his little jokes. I don't speak French perfectly, but I understand French perfectly. I speak
