“It is stronger than you or anyone knows. Everything's fine.”

I didn't take this as being the last word. Of course, I was a visiting minister and my field was not military, and I knew it. I also realized that whatever was being said to me it was anticipated that I would report it in other quarters in America, and that the President would learn about it from my lips. That was anticipated. That was why it was said to me. I was certainly no authority to debate it with them. Still there was a sense of sincerity. He seemed to me to believe what he was saying. I tended to have a sense of security because of the apparent sincerity and obviously knowledgable basis of his comment.

Tardieu emphasized that, as did one or two others. There was one man, whose name I don't recall, who I was walking with in the procession after the Marshal had made his speech. I was walking with him to the grave to the lay of the wreath. I said to him, “It's very interesting to me to hear the Marshal, who is of course a man of great wisdom and knowledge in this field, say that France is impregnable and that the western world has nothing to fear from the rise of the Germans.”
