say they are. That is all I know. I know that all the munitions makers are going full strength. Cruceaux has been at top production for a long time. But France cannot be as strong as they believe they are unless they have bought some materials and supplies outside of France. In the steel business, as you know, we know where every ton goes. I know that the French haven't bought from America and from England what would be their proper quota if they really are as strong as they believe they are.”

I said, “How do you find them as regards their general unity?”

He shrugged his shoulders and said, “Well, you know the French are never united, but sometimes they get through all right.” Then he cheered up and said, “You always have to remember what good individual fighters they are. They are remarkable individual fighters. They're just remarkable.” He went on to talk about his experiences in the First World War, how they could fight, how daring they were, how they would make do things that nobody else would be able to do anything with. He rehearsed the old taxicab story - when they didn't have mobile operations for their troops, they grabbed the taxicabs and used them.
