the growing resentment of the people. The Banque de France controls the money policy, and the money policy controls the wages and controls the share that the working man and the peasant have in such prosperity as we are able to produce. Our manufacturers are not able to understand the American idea of paying high wages, getting a lot of production, and selling the goods back to the people who earn the wages. That cannot be explained. I am not an economist. I am a physicist, but I do understand some part of economics, and I have found it is hopeless to try to explain that. This is one of the things that is causing this disunity.”

Of course, I didn't press him too much. He agreed that Marshal Petain was probably right, that the defenses were strong and there would be no trouble. “Give yourself no concern, madame, there will be no trouble with these Germans.”

The de La Rochefoucaulds were kind of nervous about the Germans because, of course, Chateau-Thierry overlooks the valley of the Marne.
