that he made a very good Governor of Indiana. I do know that he did many things very well indeed in Indiana, but that Indiana was sunk in the worse possible kind of government, the most illiberal kind of government when he got there. While he was Governor of Indiana he assented to, and I'm not sure that he didn't originate, a program of unemployment relief which was very creditable. Wayne Coy was the man he selected to operate it. I don't know what Wayne Coy's background was before that. I think he had been a social worker at some time, but he was then a newspaper man, I think. At any rate, he was a very good person. He administered the program very well. The Governor stood back of him. The Governor backed him and very liberal interpretations of what ought to be done.

During the time that he was Governor on two occasions I went to Indiana and was entertained at the Governor's house. I think I went once to a luncheon and once to a a state dinner which he gave. It was very nice. He made a very impressive host. He did that kind of thing extremely well. He had a perfectly lovely wife who was graceful, intelligent and competent to see the world. She was not a shy retiring country girl. She knew how to live, get on, be nice to people, take the sting out
