heard that Susanna and Mary were going, said, “Why don't I go?”

I said, “There's no reason why you shouldn't, Belle.” I went on to say, “I'll get you tickets for everything. It's no trouble at all.”

So we all went out. We had two rooms together in a connecting arrangement. I can remember that we ran back and forth between the rooms all the time and had many a good laugh. I think Gertrude Ely also came out, but she didn't come until later. We had a hard time getting a place for her to stay. There were quantities of people who came. We started buzzing around immediately. Mrs. Livingston also came. She was from one of the old New York patroon families and was of great importance to the New York delegation when she came, because she represented the old families, and was also a liberal contributor to the party. She was a typical old fashioned, high-principled, highly-placed woman. There was no question of her standing and status in life. She dressed the way that kind of woman does - as she darn pleased. She had no style. Whatever was comfortable and convenient was what she wore and didn't bother about style. I got her tickets into everything. It was easy to get them for her, because she was well-known in the New York delegation.
