headquarters of every candidate, whether you're going to vote for him or not, or whether you have a vote or not. Of course, I had no vote in the convention. I wasn't a delegate or an alternate. But it's courtesy to visit all the headquarters so I visited the McNutt headquarters and whatever other headquarters there were.

I remember being so astonished at my friend Emily Newell Blair. She was the most active worker for Paul McNutt. She was buzzing around and getting people to come into headquarters. She said to me, “You will come into headquarters and sign the book, won't you?”

I said, “Certainly.”

“Won't you bring the ladies who are with you? Won't Mrs. Baird and Mrs. Roosevelt sign the book?” Well, of course, they signed the book too. They were perfectly amiable about everything and everybody.

Then there was a big woman's breakfast almost the first morning after we got there. I made a speech, which was largely a summary of what Roosevelt and the Democrats had done for the welfare of the common people of the United States in these right years, how this chain must not be broken, how this was the way for a good life for the USA, and so forth. It was obvious enough, but it was a popular speech. It was the kind
