want equality. This woman's party group is fanatical on the subject and have invented this amendment.

Well, they were trying to get this amendment adopted by the platform committee so that it could be in the platforms of both parties. Among the people that they had converted to their way of thinking was Emma Guffey Miller, who was a great power in the Democratic Party. She had been a $member of the Democratic National Committee for many years. Her brother, Joe Guffey, was a Senator from Pennsylvania and was a sizable power.

All the protective labor legislation for women would be wiped out by this. It would have been the utmost folly. No State could make a law to regulate the hours of labor of women, or to establish a Minimum Wage Board for women's wages. Women are always the lowest paid and the fact that no law can be made which isn't equal for both doesn't mean a thing. It doesn't have anything to do with the realities of the case. My group has always felt that the way to bring about a proper relationship is to do it State by State. There are some States to this day (1954) in which a woman doesn't have equal guardianship rights with regard to their own children. There are only a few, but some. South Carolina has never been able to correct that. As a matter of fact, by court decisions,
