could throw sweetness and light around a little and that it would have some effect upon some of the delegates and would somewhat smoothe the thing out.

Among the other things that she was disturbed about, was the fact that Farley didn't want her come, or she was afraid that Farley didn't want her to come. I think I called Farley. This episode is mentioned in Farley's book, Jim Farley's Story, on page 277. I don't altogether remember all that Farley says there. He says that I asked him in our conversation if I had seen the Barkley message and what he thought of it, and that he said to me that all he knew about it was what the newspaper men had told him and he hadn't seen it. He goes on to say that later on in the lay the President called him up and that he met me in the hall later on. It seems funny. We always were meeting people in the hall, but that's the way it is. He says that I asked him if he had received a telephone call from the President and we had an exchange over that. I don't remember that at all. He says that I said, “You'd be right,” in answer to a comment of his. I'd certainly never use those words. That's not my lingo. However, I wouldn't say that I didn't say something that meant the same thing.
