However those three men - Jesse Jones, Jim Farley and Tom Lamont - just were of enormous help. This was all during the thirties. During that awful West Coast longshoreman's strike it was Tom Lamont who finally got the West Coast Employer's Association people to deal with the union. Jesse Jones helped in so many occasions that I've almost forgotten any detailed ones. He was a great money lender so he had connections way outside of the State of Texas. He knew bankers and business men everywhere. He helped me on the Akron strike. He helped me enormously on the steel strike. Jesse Jones and Tom Lamont both helped me in the coal strikes when they were bad and difficult.

Of course, their mission was always to the employers, telling them what would be a good thing to do, a practical thing to do, and why it would be practical, and about what it would take in the way of concessions.

Jim helped me on General Motors, and Lamont did too. They both worked at it from two different angles. Lamont worked at it through the financing operations and Jim Farley through some political connections that he had that led straight into the management operations.
