going out. He enjoyed the society of the rich and comfortable, and the minor luxuries that come with good service and a good dinner.

Harry wasn't primarily an intellectual. He didn't approach his problems from the intellectual point of view. He approached them from an intuitive and sympathetic point of view. It was interesting to many people to see him enjoy social life so much. He finally enjoyed the more recherche aspects of social life - not just going out for dinner, but going off on gay house parties, going to the races, and getting terribly interested in the races and the horsey set that go to the races, have boxes and entertain a lot.

Many wives in that position would have hung back and felt shy, but Barbara enjoyed going too. She wasn't at all the retiring little wife that so often comes to Washington with a man who gets a high appointment. Yet Barbara might have been assumed to be that. She certainly wasn't the dashing type. As you looked at her, you wouldn't have thought of her as cutting a swath. She enjoyed the social aspects of life that came to her and I think she enjoyed Harry's pleasure in these completely new amusements that were open to them. She certainly participated and had a good time and they enjoyed it
