he had such terrific expenses. The publishers had already advanced Harry $80,000 - a preposterous advance. That may not be the exact figure, but that's about it. It was a very large sum, much more than most people ever get as an advance. He had to have it because he was in debt and was poor. He couldn't release himself to do the book if he didn't have enough money to clear off his debts, support his family, and so forth while he did. Lubin had agreed to help him. He had expected to pay out quite a lot of money for technical assistance, research assistance and one thing and another. I've forgotten how much was completed, but it was only a very small portion when he got this terrible worsening of his illness and died. The thing haunted him on his deathbed. I don't know how many people promised to do the best they could and help him.

Sherwood, of course, was a professional and he came through. He was truly devoted to Hopkins. I think he thought a great deal of him. He had a true appreciation of Hopkins's significance in the world as it was at that time and of this strange duality in his nature which had made it possible for him at an unexpected turn of events to take over the greatest responsibility for military, diplomatic and political leadership that
