was an extraordinary situation for her, and would it be too much trouble if on some morning when she had an hour free Mrs. Roosevelt could bring little Diana to see her. The Queen said, “Why, I'd be delighted to see the little girl, but you know how children are. I think it would make more of an impression on her if she saw me when I was dressed to go out. I'll see her this evening. I'm going to this dinner at the British Embassy. I shall have on my best spangled dress and my best tiara. I think little Diana might like to see me.”

She wore a lively multi-colored dress, covered with rose spangles, which was almost the loveliest dress I ever saw, to the dinner which Their Majesties gave at the British Embassy, to which I was invited, thoughtnot everybody was. She had a perfectly beautiful tiara, which was pointed and had long diamonds. It's a perfectly beautiful thing. With that outfit on she care out into the hall and received Diana alone with a lady in waiting. She talked with her and it was a pleasant episode.

That's how I'm sure that the Hopkins's were living in the White House at that time. It was probably in early '40 that I talked to Mrs. Roosevelt who was about to go away somewhere. She had been away, and been away,
