something different. I've got to do this another way. I want you to know it. I don't want you to hear about it. I wanted to tell you.”

I said, “Well, I think my reasons were all good and I thought you agreed.”

He said, “Yes, I think they were good and I did agree. Here's a point of view and some information that I think you've not thought of, as there's no way you would know about it. It's just got to be. It's a very sub rosa kind of thing and I can't tell you all about it at any time. Is that all right?”

I said, “Sure, it's all right.”

This was at the beginning of the war. I was later told, when I could be told, why the action was taken. Although, to this day I don't know that it was really the best thing to do, I would be perfectly willing to admit that it was a plausible action and that the people who were absolutely vital to him with regard to the prosecution of the war thought that it ought to be done. They were going to raise hell if it wasn't done their way. Whereas, the thing that I had planned and had in mind, if I wasn't allowed to do it that way, wouldn't hurt anybody but me and I wasn't going to raise a row. It was easier for him, and probably just as good a way,
