Henry Wallace, so far as I could observe, was treated with courtesy, but not with cordiality by most of the people present. It was all right. It was nothing you could pin down really. It wasn't, “Henry, I'm so glad to see you!”, but it was very courteous and sort of “How do you do? How are you, Henry? Pleasant to see you. How's Ilo? How's your wife?” It was that kind of thing. I talked with Henry after the dinner, as well as during the dinner, so that if people had been raw to him he had an opportunity to say to me if he wanted to, because I saw him alone. Certainly the ladies treated Ilo with great cordiality, Mrs. Truman went and spoke to her, said, “Do sit down here and talk to me a minute.” She made a particular effort to have her sit beside her in the drawing room after dinner. She singled her out in such a way that it was perfectly obvious that she wanted to make sure that Ilo had somebody to talk to.

Everybody was perfectly cordial to everybody else. Frank Walker, of course, is particularly fond of Henry Wallace. I saw him talking to him. Henry Morgenthau wasn't fond of him, and it didn't seem to me that he went out of his way to do anything for Henry Wallace. I think Henry Wallace was at least courteously received by everybody.

The women, of course, always are much freer than the men are. They haven't as much to protect. After all, their profession
