they could get at them, in irate demand that they be put to some useful war work. They had registered and wanted to work.

I remember the days of the First World War, when we all, with great solemnity, went and filled out these great long registration forms, saying all the things we could do, besides whatever our professional or trade usual occupation was. The questions were asked, “Could you sail a boat? Could you run a motor boat? Could you ride a horse? Could you drive a horse? Could you drive an automobile? Could you saddle a horse? Could you cook? Could you sew? Could you make clothes? Could you sew seams? What is the degree of your skill?” It was a long form. I remember the Washington Market court being turned over to this purpose. For days and days it was crowded with women filling out these questionnaires - men too.

Those of us in the know knew that those women's registrations had never even been locked at by anybody. They had never been glanced at. They had been gathering dust in various cellars in various cities and states and localities. It was a national thing in World War I. All men had to register too.
