being very, very glad that the President had liked Churchill and feeling that it was much safer for this country, as well as for the world, if President Roosevelt liked and was able to make rapprochement with Churchill, able to believe him, able to take some leadership from him.

That's seems a queer thing to say and to feel, but actually Churchill had much more life experience of war, rumors of war, making war, making peace, keeping the world on an even keel than anybody in the USA did, including Franklin D. Roosevelt. I remember feeling inwardly that it was a darn good thing that Roosevelt liked Churchill and that Churchill had managed not to patronize him, or not to rouse his hackles in some way or other, so that he would be off Churchill. Churchill is the kind of man that people can be off of. Franklin Roosevelt had elements within his own nature that made it possible for him to get off, entirely off, the hooks with certain people, not matter how good they were. He just couldn't get on with them. That was part of his limitation and also part of his strength. Anyhow, I thought that the whole relationship with Churchill was very, very lucky.

I have never known and never shall know whether there was more contributed to the meeting between Roosevelt and Churchill than just what Roosevelt and Churchill had to contribute spiritually and in the way of making a basis of
