really, until I saw him in this time when we discussed Yalta, kind of running afoul of the President. I said to myself, “I don't know whether this fellow's safe or not. I'm not sure that he's totally loyal, that he hasn't got some notions of his own.”

Q:

Well, you see, this would be after the election, and Byrnes certainly had an idea that the lightning could strike him in 1944 - a not unfounded idea, either.

Perkins:

Oh yes, it was founded. His pique might have influenced his relations. I don't know. I only know the episode, and I only know that Roosevelt sort of shut him up and changed the subject.

Q:

Then you see, right after this, Byrnes resigned.

Perkins:

Yes.

Q:

Within days.

Perkins:

Really?

Q:

Yes. He resigned on April the 2nd. Stimson replaced him, you remember.
