people--that they were substantial people. His father's father had also been an engineer, whatever that meant. It meant something very definite. It meant some form of education.

Lewis used to talk about this Welsh background, but he talked principally, of course, about the degraded state in which they found themselves in Iowa--in which this good family of Lewises found themselves in Iowa. His father had married an American lady who was a Mormon. Lewis's mother was a Mormon, and she practiced her religion, apparently, sincerely, although there were very few other Mormons in the community in which they lived. That was her approach to religion, although all the other Lewises had been Baptists-- I guess that's what the Welsh are, or something akin to it.

At any rate, Lewis had been deprived of a large part of his education, first by virtue of having to live in this poverty-stricken town, and second by going to work in the mines so early. His story of struggle I don't know exactly.

He never told it all to me, and I only gathered it piece by piece, you know, about how he struggled. He was not proud of the struggle particularly.
