It was a quick flight to Washington. The plane was not quite full because they were rushing us ahead of the others. The airport must have known more, but they didn't tell us. They knew that they had to get these New York cabinet members to Washington. They put us and anybody else who was in the airport and ready on that plane. They were still calling up extra planes for the evening flights, because so many people were calling in for reservations for Washington.

When we got to Washington, Delaney was there. I'm pretty sure that neither Walker's car or Wallace's car was there. Delaney, with that kind of queer second sight that he had, I think had figured out that I would be at the airport. He had taken the car, gone over there and planted himself. He just watched everyone who came off every plane. He was that kind of a fellow. He was one of those curious Irishmen that had hunches and would do a thing like that. So Walker, Wallace and I wet in this car. My other young man went in the bus and didn't try to go with us. Delaney knew more than we did so we all said, “What has happened?”

He said, “It said on the radio that the Japs were shooting at us.”

We said, “The Japs?”

“That the Japs were shooting at American ships.
