that you couldn't see out of your windows what was going on?”

We asked the usual questions:

Had there been an airplane patrol?

Yes, the airplane patrol had made its usual flight that day and hadn't seen any Japanese fleet. I forget what time they had made it, but it hadn't been time for their second patrol when the attack was made. At least, the story was that the airplane patrol had been made, or at least partially made. There was always a little vagueness in my mind about that.

When the attack had occurred, as nearly as I could make out, people were not at their battle stations - or, at least, a great many of them were not at their battle stations. There had undoubtedly been some heroic efforts at salvage by petty officers who were aborad ships, and by the guard ccrew that had been left behind while the others had shore leave. That was not unusual. That was the usual pattern for Saturday night and Sunday. There had been a party of some sort, a general dance, but that seemed to have nothing to do with the case. There didn't seem to be anything reprehensible about that. It was just the usual ordinary Saturday evening entertainment for all hands.

I remember very little of any reports from the military, and yet there was a military installation there. I don't remember anything about any reports from the army. I don't recall much being said about it. I think they hadn't been able to get
