Andrews. I was met by the commander of Andrews Air Force Base. He came on board and escorted me over to Johnson's plane. And, as I say, we were the only two on the plane except for his one staff guy; and the press were up in the front part.

Those were, you know, fun days. Intoxicating in a way. But all of that's dropped away.

Q:

Let me turn the tape over here.

Stanton:

I didn't continue, after Johnson's death I guess I helped the girls and Mrs. Johnson at the Blair House. I know I was up in their private quarters at the Blair House on the morning of his big funeral service there in Washington. She asked me to serve on the board, even before he died, of the foundation that was established and to help them with the president's papers and things of that kind.

I did a lot of the things she asked me to do, but I kept as much distance as I could, for two reasons. First, because I didn't have the time to give to it.

[Telephone interruption]

I resigned from the board of the foundation. Getting back and forth to Stonewall, Texas and Austin and so forth took an enormous amount of time.

Q:

Did Johnson blame his lack of credibility solely on Vietnam or were there other issues
