Biography
Dr. Jessica Kimpell's (D. Phil, 2010; M. Phil, 2006, University of Oxford) interests lie in the history of political thought and in contemporary political theory. Previously she taught at the University of Oxford and the University of Delaware,
including introductory courses on political philosophy and political theory, along with courses on the history of political thought (from Plato to Weber) and American political thought. Her publications include "Neo-republicanism: Machiavelli's solutions for Tocqueville's republic," in the European Political Science Review (2009) and an edited book on Thomas Paine (2009). Her
dissertation focused on aspects of the republican tradition, particularly arguments about political order and freedom. She is currently working on projects pertaining to the theory of the republic in modern thought and Tocqueville's relationship to
the republican tradition. Prior to her doctoral studies, she received a master’s degree journalism from Northwestern University and worked as a reporter for Congressional Quarterly (CQ) in Washington, D.C.
