RESOLUTION TO
ESTABLISH
THE INSTITUTE OF JEWISH AND ISRAEL STUDIES
WHEREAS Columbia University has fostered a long and distinguished tradition in the academic study and teaching of Jewish civilization, and
WHEREAS Columbia is one of the leading institutions in Jewish studies in the country, and
WHEREAS the Center for Israel and Jewish Studies within the Department of History has been flourishing since 1950 and has been expanding its offerings on the history and culture of Israel, and
WHEREAS the proposed institute would include an interdisciplinary faculty who hold appointments in several departments of the university including History, Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, and MEALAC; and would attract, in addition, two visiting professors and three to five visiting fellows each year, and
WHEREAS the Institute’s budget would be fully self-funded and teaching would be covered by current instructional lines,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Institute of Jewish and Israel Studies be
established under the administrative supervision of the Vice President for Arts and Sciences.
