New York Life

The fast pace of New York is balanced with the tranquility of the city’s open spaces and a plethora of cultural refuges. Comprised of diverse, ethnic neighborhoods, New York is a multi-faceted, international city where there is something for everyone.

The Neighborhood

Columbia is located in Morningside Heights on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The neighborhood starts at approximately 106th Street and extends to 123rd Street, between Morningside Park and Riverside Park.

Academics populate the area and attend neighborhood institutions including the Bank Street College of Education, the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Manhattan School of Music.

Outdoor cafes, ethnic restaurants, music clubs, open-air fruit markets, clothing stores and ice-cream parlors are plentiful, and student discounts are accepted at many local establishments.

Housing

Columbia University provides, but does not guarantee, housing for graduate students who apply for it by the application deadline, May 1. Priority is given to students who live the greatest distance from the university. Most students in Columbia housing live in graduate student apartment buildings. There are also a few studio and one-bedroom apartments in buildings owned and managed by the university. All are within a 10-minute walk of campus. Students apply for housing after their acceptance to the social work program.

Transportation

New York is easily navigated by foot, subway and bus. In addition, taxicabs are available. Car owners should keep in mind that street parking in New York City is extremely limited and garage parking can be costly.
