CUSSW Professor Emerita Honored by the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York

The Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York, Inc. (CCC) has conferred its 2012 Founders’ Award on Dr. Sheila B. Kamerman, Compton Foundation Centennial Professor Emerita of Social Work for the Prevention of Children’s and Youth Problems at the Columbia University School of Social Work, citing her exceptional career as a renowned child, family and social policy scholar and her significant service to CCC’s board. The Founders’ Award, named on behalf of CCC founders including Eleanor Roosevelt and Justine Wise Polier, is awarded annually to an extraordinary individual who demonstrates an unwavering commitment to child well-being and civic life.

Accepting the award at CCC-NY’s annual meeting on June 7, Dr. Kamerman said: “Just knowing that I am in some way linked to that very special group of CCC founders, beginning with Eleanor Roosevelt, Justine Wise Polier and Trude Lash—that is an honor all by itself.” She noted that she was fortunate to have discovered CCC at the very beginning of her graduate social work studies as a rich resource for information about social services for children in New York City.
