Three Social Work Students Named Presidential Management Fellows
New York, NY – Three students at the Columbia University School of Social Work have been named a Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. The program is highly competitive and selected fellows participate in a
two-year paid internship working in the Federal government that includes leadership development, training, and rotations among various Federal agencies.
The recipients of the 2008 PMF awards are:
Erin Balch
Erin is a dual degree student and will be receiving her Master's degree in Social Work and Public Health. Prior to attending CUSSW, she served in the Peace Corps as a community mobilizer for National Institute for Children's Rights in Cape Verde, West Africa. Erin received her bachelor's degree in Social Welfare and Anthropology at University of California in Berkeley. She hopes to pursue a career in global health and program evaluation.
Meghan Gleason
A native of Darien, Connecticut, Meghan is an advanced clinical practice student focused in the area of family, youth, and children. She is proud to be the first person in her family to receive a Master's degree, and plans to put the skills she has acquired at CUSSW for her future endeavors as a PMF this fall. Fluent in Spanish, Meghan received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Maya Thet
Maya’s involvement in political advocacy and passion for addressing the needs of different diverse communities inspired her apply to CUSSW, where she specializes in international social welfare and minors in law. Raised in Madison, Wisconsin, Maya attended Stanford University in California where she majored in history and minored in human biology. Maya has worked nationally in Palo Alto, CA, Boston, MA, Washington DC and internationally in Tanzania. She speaks Burmese, French, and Swahili.
Established by Executive Order in 1977, the PMF Program draws graduate students from a variety of academic disciplines and diverse backgrounds to the Federal service. The PMF program selects men and women who have a clear commitment and interest in the leadership and management of public policies and programs. The two-year paid program includes 80 hours of formal classroom training each year, challenging assignments, accelerated promotions, and opportunities to network between agencies. Fellows are hired by agencies and given exposure to domestic and international issues in such areas as public administration, technology, science, criminal justice, health, and financial management. Fellows often use this experience as a stepping stone to highly visible and respected leadership positions in the Federal Government.
