CUSSW's Marcy Carlson Awarded NICHD Award
Marcy Carlson, an Assistant Professor at CUSSW, has been awarded a grant by the National Institute of Child and
Human Development (NICHD) to do further research on the impact of family structure on parent and child well
being. The KO1 Mentored Research Science Development Award, an elite and highly competitive grant for young
faculty and researchers, entitles Carlson to five years of funding and mentorship. She will continue the work
she has already begun with the "Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study" in conjunction with Irv Garfinkel,
the CUSSW Mitchell I. Ginsberg Professor of Contemporary Urban Problems and Sara McLanahan of Princeton. Trained
as a family sociologist, Carlson is primarily interested in "the family as an institution that both shapes and
is itself shaped by the individuals therein, embedded within larger social and structural contexts."
