CUSSW Alumna in the News
On March 30th, the New York Times profiled CUSSW alumna (MSW, 2003) Martha Lopez-Hanratty in
the Westchester section of the paper. The article, entitled "For Hispanics, Bridges Built by One Who Crossed
Them", chronicled Ms. Lopez-Hanratty's rise from a 17-year-old new immigrant fresh from Mexico City to her role
today pioneering outreach programs for Westchester County's growing Hispanic population. As the Westchester
county program administrator for Hispanic affairs, her mission is to ease the bumps in the road for the area's
new Latin immigrants. In Westchester, where Hispanics make up 15% of the population and are the fastest growing
population, Ms. Lopez is charged with reaching out to them and ensuring that public officials remain sensitive
to their needs.
