Social Work Professor Vincent Guilamo-Ramos Receives New 5-Year CDC Grant for $1.5 million
Professor Vincent Guilamo-Ramos was recently awarded a new 5-year research grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The new project, entitled "Family and Cultural Influences on Sex Among Latino Youth", seeks to examine both familial and cultural factors associated with sexual risk taking in diverse samples of Latino adolescents.
The project's aims are:
- to examine the role of two core Latino cultural constructs, "familismo" and "machismo/marianismo" in the formation of adolescent romantic relationships and the engagement in sexual risk activity,
- to examine the relationship between parental embracement of these two cultural constructs and the extent to which their adolescent children embrace these concepts,
- to elucidate the developmental dynamics of the above as adolescents transition from mid to late adolescence,
- to examine Latino adolescent and parental conceptions of preferred partners and activities that are appropriate for "adolescent couples", and
- to examine how acculturation related stress impacts the above and to test the generalizabilty of the above across three distinct Latino subgroups: Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans.
Project funding runs from June 1, 2005 and until May 31, 2010.
