Dr. Dana Alonzo Promoted to Associate Professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work

Columbia University School of Social Work is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Dana Alonzo from Assistant to Associate Professor.

Associate Professor Alonzo’s research has a strong focus on the prevention of suicide. She examines risk and protective factors for suicide attempt among individuals with mood disorders and schizophrenia. Her long term intervention research program includes attention to treatment engagement and retention of depressed individuals and individuals with suicidality. Accordingly, she has developed and tested novel interventions aimed at improving engagement, treatment and adherence among suicide attempters, with special interest in Hispanic individuals at especially high risk of suicide and who have demonstrated low treatment engagement.

Associate Professor Alonzo was a National Institute of Mental Health Research Fellow and is principal investigator for studies that have been funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. She has been nominated for Andrej Marusic Research Award for the best scientific contribution to the field of suicide prevention and treatment by a young investigator.  This award is jointly supported by three major Suicide Prevention organizations.

Associate Professor Alonzo has specialized practice experience in child and adolescent mental health, family therapy, and crisis intervention and has a bilingual clinical practice background within a range of psychiatric inpatient and ambulatory settings.
The Columbia University School of Social Work faculty, staff and students extend their congratulations to Dr. Dana Alonzo upon the occasion of her promotion to associate professor.
