Graduate Students Advisory Council honors faculty members who exemplify the ideals of PhD mentoring.

GSAC Faculty Mentoring Award honors Professor Irwin Garfinkel

Irwin Garfinkel, Mitchell I. Ginsberg Professor of Contemporary Social Problems, has been presented with a Faculty Mentoring Award by the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC). The Faculty Mentoring Award honors faculty members who exemplify the ideals of PhD mentoring. In particular, the award recognizes Professor Garfinkel as a superior mentor throughout all stages of graduate education -- from encouraging students to enroll at Columbia, teaching in the classroom, providing guidance as an advisor and dissertation sponsor, to finally actively and energetically championing students on the job market. Professor Garfinkel was nominated by eight current or recently graduated Social Work Doctoral students for his excellence as a mentor.

The Faculty Mentoring Award is given to only two professors annually, one from the Humanities and one from the Sciences. The award will be presented to the two honorees at a special GSAC dinner. Professor Garfinkel has also been invited to speak at the Ph.D. Convocation Ceremonies at St. Paul's Chapel on Monday, May 16th at 3:30.
