Fred Ssewamala Promoted to Associate Professor at the School of Social Work
New York, NY – Dr. Fred Ssewamala has been promoted to Associate Professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW).
Dr. Ssewamala has distinguished himself as a member of the CUSSW faculty with his asset-based social interventions and research in Uganda, sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States. Funded by the National Institutes of Mental Health and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), his work entails the design and testing of the impact of institutional structures, programs, and policies on asset ownership.
“We are proud of Dr. Ssewamala, who through his scholarship is also changing the lives of orphans in several parts of the world,” says Dean Jeanette Takamura.
Many CUSSW students specializing in international social work have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Ssewamala in Uganda and see first-hand how he has developed and used Individual Development Accounts to ensure that young orphans have futures filled with hope and the opportunity to achieve self-sufficiency.
In addition, he has been involved in the coordination of the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) and School of Social Work dual degree program. Dr. Ssewamala has also been an advisor to the Open Institute Society’s SOROS student and fellows. More recently, he has become involved in the work of Columbia University’s Central Asia Global Health Research Center. In addition to his faculty post at CUSSW, Dr. Ssewemala has a joint appointment at the SIPA. He is a Senior Research Fellow with the New America Foundation and a Visiting Professor at the University of California-San Francisco in the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies.
Prior to joining the faculty at CUSSW, Dr. Ssewamala served at the Red Cross (Uganda), where he held several positions related to designing projects and programs for poverty alleviation and community development. Dr. Ssewamala also worked in various managerial and supervisory positions at Justine Petersen Housing and Reinvestment Corporation, a not-for-profit corporation that assists low-to-moderate income individuals and families become homeowners, access financial institutions, start their own micro-businesses, and accumulate assets. His ground-breaking projects have made him a frequently invited presenter at prestigious international and national organizations.
