Westina Matthews Shatteen to Speak at CUSSW Commencement
New York, NY – Westina Matthews Shatteen, Managing Director at Merrill Lynch, will address graduates of the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW) at their commencement ceremony on Monday, May 19, 2008. The ceremony will be held in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center at 2:30pm.

An inspiring speaker, Dr. Matthews Shatteen has strong roots within the intellectual community of scholars and exudes both a sense of spiritual awareness and a profound appreciation for the unlimited potential of our human species. We look forward to her participation in our Commencement exercises.”
Dr. Matthews Shatteen is an accomplished Wall Street executive, author and public speaker. For over 25 years, she has turned her passion and creativity into realities for so many in the community at large. Over the course of her more than 22-year Merrill Lynch career, Dr. Matthews Shatteen has held several positions with responsibilities that have included global philanthropic giving, educational programs, employee-related programs, community development, and global diversity. She was the first woman and person of color elected as trustee for the Merrill Lynch Foundation, and is president of the Winthrop H. Smith Memorial Foundation, a foundation that helps Merrill Lynch employees in need.
Dr. Matthews Shatteen has received numerous honors for her achievements in the boardroom and commitment to community service. She currently serves as a trustee at the University of Dayton and is a director of both the Executive Leadership Council and The International Women’s Forum; and is the immediate past president of the New York Women’s Forum. She has also served on the boards of the Ms. Foundation, Wilberforce University, Bank Street College of Education, the Arthur Ashe Institute, the New York Theological Seminary, and the New York Association of Grantmakers, among others. In July 1990, Mayor David Dinkins appointed Ms. Matthews to a four-year term as a Member of the Board of Education for the City of New York.
Dr. Matthews Shatteen earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in education at the University of Dayton, a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Chicago, and served as a postdoctoral research fellow at both Northwestern University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is the author of three inspirational books in the Have A Little Faith series.
The CUSSW commencement ceremony will be held at 2:30pm in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. The Columbia University commencement exercises will be held from 10:30am to 12:00pm in front of Low Memorial Library on Wednesday, May 21, 2008.
