Associate Professor Julien Teitler to Receive Mentoring Award

Dr. Julien Teitler, Associate Professor and Doctoral Program Chair at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW), will be honored with the 2009-2010 Mentoring Award at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Ph.D. Convocation on May 15, 2010.

Each year, the award is presented to two outstanding faculty members – one honors a member of the Arts and Sciences faculty and the other honors a faculty member teaching in a doctoral program that is not in the Arts and Sciences. The Mentoring Award was instituted in 2004 by the Graduate Student Advisory Council to acknowledge exemplary work with Ph.D. students by exceptionally dedicated faculty. More than 40 compelling nomination letters spanning across all disciplines were received for Dr. Teitler.

"We are proud of Dr. Teitler and appreciative of the superb work he does as the Chair of the Doctoral Program. He generously gives every measure of support to our doctoral students, fully committed to preparing scholars and leaders for the profession," said Dean Jeanette Takamura. "As Dr. Teitler’s own perspective is multidisciplinary, he brings to his mentoring a wide, enriched perspective of how our doctoral students might best strengthen and advance their individual courses of study. Moreover, I have been consistently impressed with how much he cares about our students, their eventual careers, and their development as people and as professionals. Julien is a much beloved Chair."

This is the second time the GSAS Mentoring Award has been given to a CUSSW faculty member. Professor Irwin Garfinkel received the award in 2005.
