Dr. Rogério M. Pinto to Receive Society for Social Work and Reseach's Early Career Achievement Award

New York, NY – Dr. Rogério M. Pinto, assistant professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work, will be receiving the 2010 Society for Social Work and Research’s (SSWR) Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Achievement Award. 

The Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Achievement Award recognize an individual who  is doing innovative, rigorous research and scholarship in his early career and is having a notable emerging impact on his field and profession.

Dr. Pinto is a Brazilian-American psychiatric social worker with extensive clinical and community experience in work with racial and ethnic minority populations. After receiving his doctoral degree in social work from Columbia University, Dr. Pinto held a three-year NIMH-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Pinto specializes in community-based participatory HIV prevention research. Most of his teaching and research have been in the United States and Brazil.

In 2007, Dr. Pinto was awarded from National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) a mentored research development award (K01) to examine factors that facilitate researchers’ collaborations with HIV service providers and to develop evidence-based models of collaboration that can be tested and replicated. Dr. Pinto is conducting other research projects, both in Brazil and New York, to further study the role of providers in HIV-prevention research and factors that influence an engagement and retention of researchers and their community-based collaborators in health-related research. Dr. Pinto’s research has been funded by NIMH, the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies, the International Association of Schools of Social Work, and with funds provided upon receipt of a Columbia University Diversity Initiative research fellowship.

The Early Career Achievement Award will be presented at the Presidential Awards Ceremony on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the SSWR Annual Conference in San Francisco, CA.
