What’s Going On @ Columbia University School of Social Work

In the summer of 2011, faculty, students, and administrators at Columbia University School of Social Work came together to create a video that celebrates the many dimensions of CUSSW. We are proud that our faculty members publish in more than 150 top tier interdisciplinary journals, have rigorous multidisciplinary research programs, and that our alumni are making their mark in their communities. As citizens of the world, we strive for excellence and innovation in research and education. We are preparing tomorrow’s leaders.

We chose Marvin Gaye's powerful song, "What's Going On," to tell our story because it called attention in 1971 to the Vietnam War and the turbulence of the period-- a time when the U.S. was confronted with so many social, economic, and political challenges similar to those that weigh heavily upon us all today. Our inner cities, unemployment, poverty, diversity, an environment requiring better care, wars that seem to not end, and questions about our role in the community of nations are issues with which the School engages daily and deeply. Within this context, we decided to celebrate social work and the School as we reflected on the question, "What's going on?" Please see for yourself.
