Licensing and Certification
Each state defines by law what is required for each level of social work licensure. For a complete list of states and requirements, see www.aswb.org.
New York State Social Work Licensing Requirements (as of 9/10/04): www.op.nysed.gov/csw.htm
New York State LMSW Requirements (www.op.nysed.gov/lmsw.htm)
- Have master's degree in social work
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Be of good moral character
- Complete 2 hr training in Child Abuse ID & Reporting (www.op.nysed.gov/caproviders.htm)
- Submit application and fee to NY State Education Department
- Pass the ASWB Masters Examination (www.aswb.org)
New York State LCSW Requirements (www.op.nysed.gov/lcsw.htm)
- Have master's degree in social work with at least 12 semester hours of clinical coursework (see below)
- Have at least three years of post M.S.W. supervised experience in clinical social work
- Be of good moral character
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Complete 2 hr training in Child Abuse ID & Reporting (www.op.nysed.gov/caproviders.htm)
- Pass ASWB Clinical Examination (www.aswb.org)
Clinical Courses Approved for the New York State LCSW Credential
New York State requires 12 semester credits for LCSW licensure. The New York State Education Department has approved the following courses at CUSSW (3 semester credits each) to be counted toward this requirement.
