The global sequence of events:

Why might the biological principles we consider in marine conservation differ from those we consider in terrestrial conservation? A few examples are given here.

A first step to protecting marine biodiversity is to design a global network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). But in designing an optimal network of MPAs, we need to carefully consider their locations.

Where should these MPAs be located? In biodiversity hotspots? In wealthier countries where they can be adequately managed and enforced? To what extent are we creating mere "paper parks"?
