MA Degree

Students in the Ph.D. program who have not been granted advanced standing and have successfully completed one year's residency with at least a B+ average are eligible to receive the degree Master of Arts.  In order to receive this degree you must submit an application form, which you can obtain from the Graduate Secretary.

Advanced Standing

If you entered the program with a Master's Degree or some graduate work from another university, you may be eligible for Advanced Standing.  If you enter from the department’s M.A. Program, you will be required to have Advanced Standing.  Obtaining Advanced Standing means that the number of residence units that you need to qualify for Ph.D. candidacy and obtain the M.Phil. degree drops from 6 to 5 or 4.  In order to receive Advanced Standing you must apply for it to the graduate school.  The advantage of Advanced Standing is that it makes possible a more rapid completion of the Ph.D. degree and entry into employment through the job market.
