Teaching experience as a graduate student Teaching Fellow is an integral part of Ph.D. training and is an essential credential for obtaining future academic positions. GSAS has developed a specialized teaching program involving workshops and online resources to enhance this aspect of graduate training. The program manual, “Teaching at Columbia,” will be distributed to all departmental Ph.D. students.
Teaching Fellowships are held in the second and third years, and in one of the final two years in the program (after returning from dissertation field research). A student is meant to have no teaching responsibilities the first and last years of GSAS support.
Other teaching opportunities include work as a Core Curriculum instructor (to be applied for in later years, and potentially in addition to GSAS support), occasional teaching fellows in other departments (e.g., MELAC) or programs (e.g., IRWAG), teaching in the Columbia Summer school and posts at other universities.
