Q:

And he's an easy author to work for?

Cerf:

He and Albert of course are such good friends.

Q:

What position does Albert Erskine have in the firm now?

Cerf:

Well, he does what he wants to. I wanted him to be editor-in-chief, but he didn't want to be bothered by all the details involved in that. He was very happy that Jim Silberman came to us. That's a much later story. But Albert has a full-time job with Red Warren, John O'Hara, and Jim Michener--three of our most famous authors. When Michener has a new book, that means a couple of months of Albert's time.

Q:

Would you call him a painstaking editor?

Cerf:

Oh! He just finished the index of this book on Spain--Iberia--that Jim has done, and he's been slaving over it for three weeks.

Q:

He does the actual index. You don't have that going out.

Cerf:

It was done outside, but Albert wasn't satisfied with it so he's been slaving over it himself. That's the kind of an editor that Albert is.
