I would say more reflective of the managing editors. Hedley would argue his views on one subject or another, and, indeed, he wrote them quite often--they appeared in the magazines. But they were--I'm trying to find out how to say this--they were usually not couched in partisan terms. They were usually very rational views, opinions, and so on. Whereas with Luce you always felt that you knew where the views came from. His background showed. Whereas the only background that shows when Donovan is the rock [?].
When Donovan shows new editor M.E.s for the magazines, did he consult you?
We talked about everything. Yes, sure.
But I mean did--
I would talk to him about my new publisher and he'd talk to me about that. Oh, sure. I mean, the number of discussions that we had about his succession, too.
To Grunwald?
Yes.
